English Lessons (Writing): Essay Topics Level Three (78 to 93)


78 u  Do you think gender is an important factor in choosing a leader? Are men better leaders or are women better leaders, or there is no difference at all? Give specific reasons and details to support your choice.

79 u  In your opinion and based on your experience, what are the best way to learn a foreign language? For example, memorization, real practice, watching videos, and joining group classes. Explain and give examples

80 u  Three Korean contributions to the world:  What are the three greatest contributions of Korea to the world? They can be inventions, food items, or even people (Examples: MP3 Player, Taekwondo, kimchi, Ban Ki Moon).  Explain why you think they are good contributions to the world. For your examples, you can tell a story about many foreigners who use such Korean inventions. 

81 u  Doctors have reported that elementary students should go to bed around 8 o’clock in the evening because it is good for their overall health. Do you agree or disagree with this?  Do you think it is a reasonable time? What time can you suggest?

82 u  Some psychologists say that adding free toys when you buy fast food encourage children to eat more fatty food.  Do you agree or disagree?  Do you think including free toys with fast food meal is not a problem?  Explain your reasons and give some examples to support your ideas.

83 u  A Youth Club is looking for volunteer to help it distribute food to victims of a typhoon.  You want to apply but you have to write an essay about yourself.  Write an essay about yourself and describe your achievements so far.   Convince them that you can be a good volunteer.

84 u  Is it always essential to tell the truth, or are there circumstances in which it is better to lie? Give reasons and explain them in details.  Give some examples to support your ideas.

These are hypothetical essay questions.  In answering, use the “IF pattern” below:

IF + Subject + past tense of the verb+ comma [,] Subject + (conditional modals such as would, could, might) + verb
Example:  If I were a bird, I would fly to the Philippines for free.

85 u  If you were a movie character, which character would you like to be and why?  Give at least three reasons and support your reasons with examples.  Use if sentences.  The pattern is like this: If I were a movie character, I would be…”

86 u  If you had a day all for yourself (just for you) and you could do whatever you wanted to, what would you do? Guide: Start with waking up and describe the entire day. Include things like what you would eat, who you would see, where you would go, and what you would do.

87 u  If you had a chance to learn another language aside from Korean and English, which language would you choose and why?  Explain and give examples to support your ideas.

88 u  If you could go back in time, what period in history would you visit? For example, you would go back during the time of King Se Jong, or you would go back during your parents’ high school days? Give two to three reasons, explain and give examples to support your reasons.

89 u  If you had magical powers, which of the following magical powers would you like to have?  [a] power to be invisible, [b] power to stop time, [c] power to read people’s minds. How would you use this power to help others? 

90 u  If you were to change one aspect in the education system in your country, which would you change? For example, you would change the number of years that a students study in high school or middle school? Give two to three reasons, explain and give examples to support your reasons.

Evaluation essays describe a thing or event and explain its importance, value, and/or relevance. Did you like this thing? Why?

Christmas day is the best day of the year because people can exchange gifts, eat excellent meals, and get together with their loved ones. Christmas has been the number one holiday for all children because of the story of Santa Clause and his reindeer. Many children, and even adults look forward to this yuletide holiday.

      To begin with, Christmas is the one and only best day to exchange gifts....

91 u  Many students get all kinds of information from the internet.  They can do research and download important materials on the net.  They can even buy books.  In the past, all these activities are done in the library. Do you think libraries are still important these days? Explain and give examples to support your ideas.

92 u  Many people have Facebook or MySpace accounts.  People use their accounts to keep in touch with friends, share information, pictures and the like. They can also make new friends from around the world and get reacquainted with old friends.  Do you think that social network sites like Facebook are important these days? Explain and give examples to support your ideas.

93 u  October 5 is International Teachers’ Day.  Many other countries also have their special day for teachers.  Why is Teachers’ Day important? Explain and give examples to support your ideas
