Grammar: Unnecessary Use of "OR"

Avoid using two words that have the same meaning and connecting them with OR.  The conjunction or is used when we are presenting choices.

Examples:
NECESSARY USE OF “OR”

“Would you like tea or coffee?” [You are being asked to choose only one, tea or coffee.]

“Filipino noodle dishes are fried or boiled.” [This means there are two kinds of noodle dishes and you can choose which one you prefer.]

UNNECESSARY USE OF “OR”

“Another benefit or advantage of exercising is that it helps you relax.” [Benefit and advantage have the same meaning and so using both words is redundant. Use only one; you’re not offering a choice]

“If you have a pet or pets, you have to be responsible.”  [It is all right just to use “a pet;” adding “or pets” is not that important and it will not change the meaning of your sentence. If the plural noun is more important, then remove “a pet” and just use “pets.”]
