Cinemalaya 2014: "Children's Show" (Film Review)

“Children’s Show” is gritty, brilliant and bold. Its approach may not be entirely original, but director Roderick Cabrido managed to infuse some originality in an unexpected way.  Beautifully photographed and skillfully edited, the film is engaging to follow. The script is realistic, but also quirky. The music pulsates and gives the film its heartbeat. The production design is very good, and you really have to pay attention to see the little details in the set that supports the statement of the film.

“Children’s Show” also boosts a great ensemble cast lead by veteran actress Gloria Sevilla. Suzzette Ranillo, Buboy Villar and Allen Dizon provided excellent support. Divine Grace Aucina gave a naturalistic performance.

Miggs Cuaderno is amazing and fearless for a very young actor. In 2013, Cuaderna played a loveable innocent country boy in “Purok 7.” In the same year, in “Quick Change,” he played a foster child of a transgender individual, and even comfortably blurting gay lingos. Now, he is a fast-talking, foul-mouthed child street fighter in this film, and a child with mental disability in "Asintado."  His acting resume should be the envy of any young teen actors. Is Miggs Cuaderno our youngest method actor or is he just such an instinctive actor?

However, the biggest acting laurel belongs to the lead star Buboy Villar. The scene where he sits on a rocking chair sums up his adept performance. Together with Cuaderno, they helped make “Children’s Show” a must see film.

  1. Story is bold, it jolts your sensitivity. Technical aspects of the execution with the outstanding performances of the actors convey the theme's story with impact. The light and shadow and pounding music show Tondo as what it is, filthy, dirty, a place to avoid. From a human perspective, my takeaway is about struggle "kaya mo ito!" to "susuko ka na ba?" and a forgiveness that cannot be granted. I have not seen enough but I can speculate this could be the best.

  2. I think you mixed it up. Isn't the lead actor Buboy Villar, not Nathan Lopez?
