Cinemalaya 2014: "Separados" (Film Review)

RATING: 3/5
“Separados” is an entertaining film following the usual Hollywood narrative and the film resembles the usual mainstream fare than an independent film. However, “Separados” tackles an often neglected subject matter in Philippine cinema, which is the lives of men separated from their wives. In an industry where male characters are mere catalysts to a women-centered narrative, it is refreshing to see a film that deals with the emotional troubles of Filipino men (minus the guns, goons and violence), although the treatment is on the superficial level. This is always the case in films that revolves around many characters. Unfortunately, only the character of Victor Neri is sufficiently fleshed out, and incidentally, Neri gave the best performance in the film.
