How to Be Diplomatic at Work, Parts 3 and 4: Essential Workplace English for B1 Learners

Vocabulary 3: Concern(preoccupation) a feeling of worry

Guide Questions:
1. What is the third way to be diplomatic?
2. What do diplomatic people do? Explain and talk about the examples.

TRANSCRIPT 3

The third way is to listen carefully before speaking. Good communication is not only about talking but also about listening carefully to others. Diplomatic people let others finish speaking before they respond. They try to understand different opinions. Some useful expressions are: “I understand your concern.” “That makes sense,” and “I see your point.” For example, during a meeting, a coworker may disagree with your idea. Instead of interrupting, you can listen first and then respond calmly. (77 words)

Vocabulary 4
A. Aggressive language
(langage agressif) rude or forceful words
B. Partially (partiellement) only in part

Guide Question:
What is the fourth way to be diplomatic? Explain and talk about the examples.

TRANSCRIPT 4

The fourth way is to disagree politely. Disagreement is normal at work. However, the way people disagree is very important. Diplomatic employees avoid aggressive language. For example, instead of saying, “That will never work,” they may say, “I’m not sure that approach will solve the problem.” “Could we consider another solution?” Another common example is “I partially agree, but I think we should also consider the budget.” This type of response sounds professional and respectful.
