GRAMMAR (Grammar): DIFFERENT WAYS OF EXPRESSING FUTURE
Goal: Improve grammar

EMPHASIS 1:
  Plan [planifier], your plans can change / vos plans peuvent changer)

VERB FORMS

TIME MARKERS

EXAMPLES

WILL

Simple future

Tomorrow

Next (week, month, year)

2 hours from now

3 days from now

1 month from now, etc.

I will give a presentation next month.

 

PLAN TO + Verb

I plan to give a presentation next month.


Practice:
What are your plans for tomorrow? – 

EMPHASIS 2:
Guess, predict, and forecast [Deviner, prédire]

VERB FORMS

EXAMPLES

WILL or MAY

Simple future (sometimes with “think, guess, etc.”)

 

Tomorrow

Next (week, month, year)

2 hours from now

3 days from now

1 month from now, etc.

I think I will/may give a presentation next month.


Practice:
Do you think it will rain tomorrow? – I think that…
Who do you think will win, the Lille soccer team or the Lyon soccer team? – I think that…


EMPHASIS 3: 
You are very sure that the action is going to happen, and it is in the immediate future. (Vous êtes très sûr que l'action va se produire et ce, dans un avenir immédiat.)

Immediate future [futur proche]

EXAMPLES

IS/AM/ARE + GOING TO

“Going to” is pronounced as “gonna”

Later

Soon

A minute from now (from minute to week)

Tonight

Tomorrow

Next day (from one hour to a week)

 

I am going to give a presentation this afternoon.

EMPHASIS 4: 
Specific date and time in the future
This is often used in formal English and the task or activity is already set in the calendar earlier.

WILL BE + ING

Future continuous

 

Examples:

on Aug 24 at 3 PM

next Monday from 9 to 10

tomorrow at 8 in the morning.

I will be giving a presentation this Friday from 8 to 9 AM.


Practice:

Person 1: I need to discuss the progress of our project. Are you free this Friday, August 30, from 9 AM?

Person 2:
Let me check my calendar. I’m sorry but I am not available at that time. I will be having a meeting with the sales team.
