How to Write a Formal Essay: Part 1 - The Outline

There are many ways to write an essay outline. This is a simple method that is easy to follow. An outline helps you write an essay that is clear and organized. Without an outline, some students write long essays that do not answer the question or do not stay on the topic.

Steps to Make an Outline

1. Read the essay question carefully. Make sure you understand it.
2. Write your thesis statement (a short sentence that shows your opinion).
3. Plan the body of your essay.
4. Write at least two main ideas that you will explain in the body.
5. Make sure your ideas are different from each other.
6. After that, plan your conclusion.

In the conclusion, answer: Why did I write this essay? and What do I want the reader to think or do?

Tip: An outline is just a guide. You can change it while writing if you get a better idea.

Example

Topic: Some people choose to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which do you prefer?

Outline

I. Thesis Statement: I prefer to live in a big city, not in the country.

II. Body

a. Education: Schools and learning are better in the city.
b. Jobs/Employment: There are more job opportunities in the city.
c. People/Diversity: Big cities have many different people and cultures.

III. Conclusion:

I think it is better to live in a big city because it gives more chances for a better life. (Or: I believe it is better to live in a big city if you want more opportunities and a better quality of life.)
