Not Your Usual Sandwich: "Croque Madame Monsieur Rondel" (Food Recipe)

If you are bored with the usual sandwich, try croque madame, a popular French recipe courtesy of my brother who works in a French restaurant.

Ingredients
Slices of brown bread
Sliced ham (or smoked turkey or chicken fillet)
Emmental cheese (queso de bola)
1 whole egg

For Béchamel sauce
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1 cup of milk
1/4 cup cream
Chicken stock or ½ chicken cube
Salt and pepper to taste
Pinch of nutmeg

Procedure
  • Prepare the béchamel sauce.  Mix all the ingredients, boil until the mixture thickens similar to the consistency of mayonnaise, or thicker.
  • Toast the brown bread.
  • Spread the béchamel sauce on one slice of the toasted bread, add sliced ham (or whatever meat you prefer) and topped it with emmental cheese. Then add another layer of toasted bread and follow the same steps.
  • Bake the whole thing in the oven just to melt the cheese.
  • Afterwards, fry an egg and place it on top the sandwich.

That’s it. It’s croque madame. If you want croque monsieur, replace the fried egg with roasted sliced tomatoes. Croque madame goes well with a side of salad.

Bon Appétit
