Put up with (phrasal verb)
= to accept something or someone that you do not like, without complaining.
Examples
I don’t like the noise, but I put up with it.
She puts up with her little brother’s games.
We have to put up with bad weather in winter.

Translations
Chinese (Simplified)

  • 忍受 (rěn shòu) = endure, put up with (neutral, everyday use) 容忍 (róng rěn) = tolerate (slightly formal)
  • Example: 我不能 忍受 这种噪音。(Wǒ bù néng rěn shòu zhè zhǒng zàoyīn.) = I can’t put up with this noise.


French

  • supporter = to bear, put up with (most natural everyday word)
  • tolérer = tolerate (more formal)
  • Example: Je ne peux pas supporter ce bruit. = I can’t put up with this noise.


Korean

  • 참다 (cham-da) = endure, hold back (very common everyday)
  • 견디다 (gyeon-di-da) = withstand, endure (a bit stronger)
  • Example:나는 이 소음을 참을 없어. (Naneun i so-eumeul chameul su eopseo.) = I can’t put up with this noise.


Japanese

  • 我慢する (gaman suru) = endure, put up with (most natural daily use)
  • 耐える (taeru) = endure, withstand (slightly stronger)
  • Example: この騒音は 我慢できない。(Kono sōon wa gaman dekinai.) = I can’t put up with this noise.


Portuguese (Brazil)

  • aguentar = put up with (most common, informal everyday)
  • aturar = put up with (colloquial, often with annoyance)
  • suportar = endure (more formal or strong)
  • Example: Não consigo aguentar esse barulho. = I can’t put up with this noise.


Spanish

  • aguantar = put up with (very common, informal everyday)
  • soportar = endure, tolerate (slightly formal)
  • tolerar = tolerate (formal)
  • Example: No puedo aguantar este ruido. = I can’t put up with this noise.


Vietnamese

  • chịu đựng = endure, put up with (neutral, most common)
  • cam chịu = accept without resisting (more passive nuance)
  • Example: Tôi không thể chịu đựng tiếng ồn này. = I can’t put up with this noise.
