Phrasal Verbs Comics #5: Break Down

Break down
A. to stop working (machines, vehicles, equipment) because of a mechanical or technical problem. Example: My car broke down on the way to work.

B. to lose control of emotions, to start crying or become very emotional. Example: She broke down in tears after hearing the bad news.

Keep it together (expression) - to stay calm and not lose control of your emotions. Example: Even though she was nervous, she kept it together during the interview.


Translations

Chinese (Simplified)

a) 停止运转(机器、车辆、设备),由于机械或技术故障。
例句:我的车在上班路上抛锚了。 (natural, “” is common for vehicles)

b) 失去情绪控制,开始哭泣或变得非常激动。
例句:听到这个坏消息后,她泪崩了。 (“泪崩” is casual but vivid; could also use “哭了起来” for more neutral tone)

French

a) Cesser de fonctionner (machines, véhicules, équipements) à cause d’un problème mécanique ou technique.
Exemple : Ma voiture est tombée en panne en allant au travail. (“tomber en panne” is the exact idiomatic phrase)

b) Perdre le contrôle de ses émotions, commencer à pleurer ou devenir très ému(e).
Exemple : Elle a éclaté en sanglots après avoir entendu la mauvaise nouvelle. (standard, correct)

Korean

a) 기계나 차량, 장비가 기계적 또는 기술적 문제로 작동을 멈추다.
예문: 내 차가 출근길에 고장이 났다. (very natural; “고장이 났다” is the standard phrase)

b) 감정을 주체하지 못하고 울기 시작하거나 매우 감정적으로 변하다.
예문: 그녀는 나쁜 소식을 듣고 눈물을 터뜨렸다. (natural and common)

Japanese

a) 機械、車両、設備が機械的または技術的な問題で動かなくなること。
例文:通勤途中で車が故障しました。 (“故障する” is the exact term)

b) 感情を抑えられなくなり、泣き出すか非常に感情的になること。
例文:悪い知らせを聞いて、彼女は泣き崩れました。 (perfectly natural)

Portuguese (Brazil)

a) Parar de funcionar (máquinas, veículos, equipamentos) por causa de um problema mecânico ou técnico.
Exemplo: Meu carro quebrou a caminho do trabalho. (“quebrar” is common for machines/vehicles)

b) Perder o controle das emoções, começar a chorar ou ficar muito emocionado(a).
Exemplo: Ela desabou em lágrimas depois de ouvir a má notícia. (“desabar em lágrimas” is idiomatic and natural)

Spanish

a) Dejar de funcionar (máquinas, vehículos, equipos) debido a un problema mecánico o técnico.
Ejemplo: Mi coche se averió de camino al trabajo. (“averiarse” is formal; “se rompió” would be casual)

b) Perder el control de las emociones, empezar a llorar o volverse muy emocional.
Ejemplo: Ella rompió a llorar después de escuchar la mala noticia. (“romper a llorar” is natural in Spain; “se echó a llorar” works in Latin America)

Vietnamese

a) Ngừng hoạt động (máy móc, phương tiện, thiết bị) do sự cố cơ khí hoặc kỹ thuật.
Ví dụ: Xe của tôi bị hỏng giữa đường đi làm. (“bị hỏng” is standard for machines/vehicles)

b) Mất kiểm soát cảm xúc, bắt đầu khóc hoặc trở nên rất xúc động.
Ví dụ: Cô ấy òa khóc sau khi nghe tin xấu. (“òa khóc” is natural and vivid)
